German air force Maj. Sebastian Demitz, right, a pilot assigned to the U.S. Air Force 14th Airlift Squadron, and U.S. airmen with the 437th Airlift Wing conduct a pre-mission briefing Nov. 1, 2012, at Joint Base Charleston, S.C. The aircrew was to fly a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft to March Air Reserve Base, Calif., to pick up utility company trucks for transport to New York state in support of Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. Sandy formed in the western Caribbean Sea and affected Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti and the Bahamas before making landfall in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States.
