PATROL BASE KAKAR, Helmand province, Afghanistan - Sgt. Brandon Harper (left), a squad leader for 1st Platoon, Company K, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, talks to his squad following a patrol in the area surrounding Patrol Base Kakar, Afghanistan, July 24. “Debriefs are important especially since we just did a red cell patrol, that’s where we flip the map and see where the enemy can hit us,” said Harper, a Salem, Ore., native. “It’s important to do these debriefs cause everybody sees different things on patrols…just like my doc had seen some shadows in a tree line that I didn’t see. Things we need to pay attention to cause not everyone is looking in the same place. It also enforces the things that they are doing good, or if they are slipping up… keeping the discipline and letting them know things like you aren’t dragging your foot where you need to be dragging your foot or you need to start doing this better. It makes us better as a whole. If we just come in and don’t say anything, we don’t learn anything.”
