Lance Cpl. Mike Lawver, an electronics technician with Regimental Combat Team 2, fires his M16 A2 service rifle during an engagement with enemy forces just outside the walls of Forward Operating Base Jackson in Helmand province, July 23. Lawver and his fellow Marines ran towards the area of enemy fire and began returning fire while concealed via a protective barrier. The firefight began early in the evening and continued for about an hour after insurgents, concealed within a nearby tree line, began firing at the base. British forces and U.S. Marines fought off the attack with machine-gun fire, mortars and several missiles.
