Sailors aboard the multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan and embarked Marines from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit participate in a 5K fun-run to kick off the ship?s Independence Day celebration July 4. The ship hosted a variety of sporting events, a movie on the big screen in the hangar bay and a fireworks display from the flight deck to celebrate the nation?s birthday. Bataan is serving as the flagship of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, supporting maritime security operations in the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet area of responsibility. The 22nd MEU, embarked aboard the ships of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, is serving as the theater reserve force for U.S. Central Command.
