Members of the Operation Yurok Joint Task Force survey an illicit marijuana grow site in Humboldt County July 23, noting violations of environmental laws. In an effort to emphasize the destructive impact illicit marijuana cultivation has on the environment, members of the Bureau of Land Management, the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) issued citations to growers found in violation of environmental laws. The joint task force, made up of 70 members from 15 agencies, was assembled at the request of the Yurok Tribe to combat illicit marijuana cultivation because growers had diverted water from streams and wells on tribal lands, causing a severe water shortage in an area already affected by drought.
