A member of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) surveys an illicit marijuana grow site in Humboldt County July 23, noting violations of environmental laws. Cal Fire supported Operation Yurok by issuing citations for clear-cutting trees and illegal burns in an effort to emphasize the destructive impact illicit marijuana cultivation has on the environment. The joint task force, made up of 70 members from 15 agencies, was assembled at the request of the Yurok Tribe to combat illicit marijuana cultivation because growers had diverted water from streams and wells on tribal lands, causing a severe water shortage in an area already affected by drought.
