Kennedy and Wissler both gave remarks during the ceremony at the Cornerstone of Peace monument, which holds the names of more than 12,000 Americans and 200,000 Japanese who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the 82-day battle. Kennedy is the U.S. ambassador to Japan and daughter of the 35th president of the U.S., John F. Kennedy. Wissler is the commanding general of III Marine Expeditionary Force.
