U.S. Marine Capt. David T. Fenbert, center, prepares to lead Marines and Japan Ground Self-Defense Force members on a six-kilometer hike Feb. 27 through the snowy terrain of Sekiyama Training Area, Niigata prefecture, Japan, during Exercise Forest Light 14-2. Forest Light is a bilateral exercise between Marines and JGSDF members with the 2nd Infantry Regiment, 12th Brigade, Eastern Army. The exercise improves Marines’ cold-weather survival skills. Fenbert is the commanding officer of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, currently assigned to 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, under the unit deployment program.
