After World War II, the War Department determined it needed to improve how it communicated over long distances. So, in 1960, the Defense Communications Agency was formed to manage the military's communication systems. This group was an early version of the modern-day agency called DISA.
The Pacific office for the DCA first opened in a tunnel in Hawaii in 1961. As the United States became more involved in Vietnam, the DCA PAC's reach in grew much larger. In 1991, DCA became the Defense Information Systems Agency. Accordingly, DCA PAC became DISA PAC.
Technology continued to advance rapidly and in 2016, DISA PAC was designated as the Department of Defense Information Network (DoDIN) Command, Pacific. Today, DISA PAC runs the communication network for the military across the entire Pacific region, supporting missions in Japan, Korea, Hawaii and Alaska. Its main focus is to provide the best possible support to service members in that area.
