The illegal drug trade in the United States has been a scourge on American society. In particular, smuggling and distribution caused upheavals in policing our borders, coastlines and cities. In June, 1971, President Richard M. Nixon signed the Executive Order that began the War on Drugs and incorporated it into the Department of Defense’s mission. The goal was to disrupt the illegal flow, destroy the criminal networks and to help quash antisocial behavior. Both DISA and its predecessor the Defense Communications Agency played crucial roles in supporting the War on Drugs by providing critical Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence or CCCI. Significant inroads were made in stopping the illegal drug trafficking that are still in force today.
