In June of 1991, the Defense Communications Agency was renamed the Defense Information Systems Agency and given a direct combat support role. Instead of generally supporting the Department of Defense with safe, reliable and secure communications across the globe, DISA’s mission tightly focused in on supporting the Warfighter across all the services and in all theatres of combat. Within a year, the Secretary of Defense released the Defense Management Report Decision 918 which clearly instructed DISA to manage the Defense Information Infrastructure through physical, virtual and financial spheres of influence. DISA assumed responsibility for the management of the entire DII across the joint services and combatant commands. Today’s National Security is directly defended by DISA across all long-haul end-to-end communications in accordance with the DMRD-918.
