Master Sgt. Charles Norman Shay was a combat medic with the Army’s 1st Infantry Division who fought on D-Day at Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. His legacy as a medic, warrior and tireless advocate for remembrance continues to inspire generations of Soldiers and medical professionals. For nearly a decade, Shay lived in France, where he shared his story with Soldiers, veterans and visitors along the Normandy coast. He was especially known for leading annual remembrance ceremonies on Omaha Beach, honoring the fallen and highlighting the contributions of Native American service members.
