The South Platte Ranger District and the Pikes Peak Ranger District conduct an invasive weed spraying project in the Lost Creek Wilderness on Aug. 10, 2024. Partnering with the Friends of Mt. Evans & Lost Creek Wildernesses and Rocky Mountain Youth Corps, the team was able to host a four-day backpacking trip to tackle nonnative invasive weeds in an area called Craig Meadows.

After hiking in the equipment nearly 5 miles from the trailhead, the team had a successful trip locating and treating an area that was largely infested with musk thistle, Canada thistle and yellow toadflax. A new infestation of orange hawkweed, a List A noxious weed in the State of Colorado, was also discovered and treated. This treatment was part of a joint wilderness weed project between the Pike and U.S. Forest Service-Arapaho & Roosevelt Natl Forests Pawnee Natl Grassland to protect water resources within the wilderness areas and was made possible thanks to a longstanding partnership between Denver Water and the U.S. Forest Service. Thank you to all of the awesome volunteers and Rocky Mountain Youth Corps staff that made this project possible. (USDA Forest Service photo by Josh Cowden)
