A C-47 with sixteen smoke jumpers arrives at the fire, estimated to be six to eight acres at 12:25 and forty to sixty acres at 3:10. Wag Dodge, the most experienced smoke jumper, selects a jump zone 500 feet lower than the fire, considering proximity to the river and wind direction. After landing, the supply chutes are scattered due to turbulence, and Dodge instructs the crew to gather them in the bottom of the gulch. He then instructs the crew to eat and fill their canteens while he ties in with the ground forces. Forty-three years later, artifacts from the fire, including a Pulaski handle, shovel head, old bed headlamps, first aid kit, needle, jumper cord, nails, D rings, and rivets, are found in an archeological survey of the area.
