In a move to strengthen initial wildfire response and risk of large, fast-growing fires, USDA Forest Service’s Rocky Mountain Region has launched a new program called Operation Sky Hammer. This is a new aviation initiative which deploys a pair of heavy-lift helicopters alongside a mobile retardant base. Designed as a rapid response tool, this program focuses on providing additional surge capacity during periods of high fire danger across Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas.
