    On February 3, 1945, Lt. Col. Robert "Rosie" Rosenthal was part of a thousand-plane raid on Berlin. Rosie's B-17 was shot down was forced to abort and was recovered by the Red Army and earned the Distinguished Service Cross for the mission.

    The Allied POWs at Stalag Luft III faced yet another harrowing ordeal. The German authorities ordered a forced of the prisoners from Stalag Luft III.
