This year marks the 80th anniversary of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 -- most commonly known as D-Day. Utah Beach saw amphibious and airborne assaults aimed at securing a beachhead on the Cotentin Peninsula to capture Cherbourg's port facilities. Despite initial challenges and a month-long delay, Allied forces managed to secure the beachhead with minimal casualties, ultimately contributing to the capture of Cherbourg by the end of June 1944.
