Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) Director Samuel J. Cox, U.S. Navy rear admiral (retired), speaks about USS Hornet (CV 12). Hornet commissioned on Nov. 29, 1943, and served throughout World War II, earning nine battle stars for Pacific Service. In the 1960s, Hornet recovered Apollo 11 and 12 after their splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. Hornet was decommissioned in 1970 and preserved as a museum ship in 1989, where she remains to this day (U.S. Navy video by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Abigayle Lutz).
