Veterans who served in World War II return to France for D-Day 79, a series of celebrations acknowledging the "Greatest Generation" are welcomed by over 300 people as they arrive for D-Day 79 commemoration ceremonies in Normandy, France, on June 1, 2023.
Highlighting the strength of the U.S. commitment to European security, U.S. military personnel and equipment will support and commemorate the 79th anniversary of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 -- widely known as D-Day. The largest multi-national amphibious attack and operational military airdrop in history, D-Day is considered the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe. This year, USAREUR-AF, and SETAF-AF’s 207th Military Intelligence Brigade, will lead JTF Normandy 79 with support from approximately 600 U.S. Soldiers and Airmen. The participating service members from approximately 25 units, will take part in approximately 60 commemorative events from May 31 to June 6, throughout approximately 40 French communities throughout the Normandy region -- including a U.S.-hosted ceremony at Normandy American Cemetery on June 6, and a commemorative airborne operation on June 4.”
