Mississippi Kites pose a safety risk between the months of June and August, as their nestlings begin to hatch. They are a very protective species and will dive-bomb pedestrians who are near their nesting areas. The birds are present throughout Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma, but specifically have strong concentrations on Windy Trails Golf Course and base housing. They look like large gray falcons with black wings. The nestlings have brown stripes on their chests. If you encounter a Mississippi Kite, please try to keep at least a 50 foot distance. Should you encounter a Mississippi Kite expressing aggressive behavior, be sure to walk, not run, place your arms above your head, maintain eye contact with the bird and attempt to slowly back away.
