The 3rd Infantry Division is proud to announce the next class of nine inductees to the Marne Hall of Fame, including 107-year-old Silver Star recipient Harold Nelson. The addition of this new class of Marne Hall of Fame inductees preserves the division's legacy by paying respect to past heroes and promoting the unit’s remarkable history. The 2022 Marne Hall of Fame and Distinguished Members of the Division class will be formally inducted at the 3rd ID Soldier’s Ball on Dec. 2.

Alwyn Cashe enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1989 as a supply specialist and later became an infantryman. Cashe served as a platoon sergeant in 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he deployed as a "Dogface Soldier" in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005.

In Salah Ad Din Province, Iraq, on October 17th, 2005, while on a nighttime mounted patrol near an enemy laden village, the Bradley Fighting Vehicle that Cashe was commanding was attacked by enemy small arms fire and an improvised explosive device that disabled the vehicle and engulfed it in flames. After extracting himself from the vehicle, Cashe set about extracting the driver, who was trapped in the vehicle. After opening the driver’s hatch, Cashe and a fellow Soldier extracted the driver, who was engulfed in the flames. While extinguishing the flames on the driver and extracting him from the vehicle, Cashe’s fuel-soaked uniform, ignited and caused severe burns to his body. Cashe then moved to the rear of the vehicle to continue in aiding his fellow Soldiers who were trapped in the troop compartment. Having extracted the four Soldiers, Cashe noticed two other Soldiers had not been accounted for and again he entered the Bradley Fighting Vehicle to retrieve them.

Cashe succumbed to his severe injuries in 2005. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2021.
