Patrick Smith received the Purple Heart award on January 3, 2022, for injuries sustained during combat in Iraq. Staff Sgt. Smith served as a commander of a M1114 Scout Reconnaissance vehicle in the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division when his truck was struck by a command detonated improvised explosive device on September 6, 2005.
