    U.S. European Command

The first Unknown Soldier interred in the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier in 1921 died during a WWI offensive in France and was buried on French soil. On October 25, 1921, the Unknown Soldier’s U.S. flag-draped casket arrived in Le Havre, France, and was ceremonially carried aboard the USS Olympia for the 15-day transatlantic voyage home to the U.S.

On October 25, 2021, the city of La Havre unveiled a plaque dedicated to the unknown American Soldier who died for France as U.S. Sailors based in Naples, Italy, and French Marins (Sailors) stood side by side in formation.

Guarded by U.S. Marines aboard the Olympia, the Unknown Soldier’s journey home continued on to Washington D.C.
