Spark Tank 2022 Submission:
Did you know that the Department of Defense has been utilizing the very same Drug Demand Reduction Program specimen collection and testing methods since 1971? For over five decades now the process has not changed. Since President Nixon initiated this program over 50 years ago, there have been many technological advancements in substance abuse sampling capabilities, one of which is the oral swab method. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we have witnessed firsthand how effective, accurate, and easy swab testing methods can be. This method has proven to be more than 98% effective at identifying specifically-targeted panels or different types of illicit drugs and alcohol use within just a few minutes of consumption, with virtually zero opportunity for contamination. Urinalysis testing can be easily compromised with countless products available online made specifically for diluting the samples. Saliva testing produces results in as little as five to fifteen minutes, making this method ideal for identifying chronic and current users. It’s easy to see why organizations all over are continuing to shift away from the mentality of simply doing business the way it has always been done and adopting saliva swab testing. Member self-reporting numbers have dropped from a high of 7% in the 1980s down to 3% according to the most recent DoD Survey of Health-Related Behaviors. Medicine, technology, and policies have changed over that past fifty years, but why has substance testing not?
