September 11, 2001, the U.S. came under attack when four commercial airliners were hijacked and used to strike targets on the ground. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives.
As a tribute to those lost, the US Navy named three San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships after the locations of where those attacks took place. USS New York (LPD 21), USS Arlington (LPD 24) and USS Somerset (LPD 25).
