Alright so we’ll just make our way over here. Bring your water bottles. Move down as far as you can. And go. This corner here going to start with the run. This over here plank. This group over here V-ups. Three, Two, One.
I’m Senior Master Sgt. Matthew Davis, I'm from the 102nd Intelligence Wing. I'm a, I'm an enlisted development role right now at the state headquarters for Massachusetts. I'll be your POC your emcee for this whole event, I do have other staff helping you along the way.
Good evening everyone. Can you hear me all right. So originally they had me speaking at six right, but then I would have been like the last person between them and beer and stuff so I asked to come at five o’clock
Thank you now I am
But I really want to just kind of welcome you to the Fifth time conference and congratulations for being here. I've got my, my Army Guard Commander with me tonight. When you look at your, your charges. Your job now is, what are you doing for their professional development. What are you doing to kind of widen their aperture. So they understand the role they play in the National Security Strategy national military strategy right. A lot of times, we lose sight of that. We get very focused narrowly focused and we lose sight of that important role that individuals play. And you never know when it's going to be, you're going to be called.
If I didn't believe in you. And I believe in this organization. I wouldn't be here tonight and I challenge you to make the most out of this opportunity.
When our nation calls us that we have done everything we can, we may not be completely successful but we can be as trained and as lethal as we are able to get trained. Right. I think so. People are saying it, it's not always like you're perfectly ready, or you're perfectly okay I think I think that you balance it all out. That makes sense
At the at the NCO level, making everyone feel like they're actually getting the job done. Toxic leadership is at all levels, what have I done in the past.
So I get parents, and senior nco’s to ask this question a lot, so. Yeah, but it's good, it's what we want them we want, empathetic, nurture pioneers, you know that are taking people into account with it,
Discretionary effort. discretionary effort. Does that mean that means they're not just walking through the day. They're looking for opportunities to.
What if you think this thing tastes like blueberries. I got to take you down to the farmers market and give you a blueberry. After the third fourth tastes I’ll be damned.
Not even the basic of expectations can be achieved because of the gap of communication, but there's no panacea for that
Establishing clear guidance and intent. It was pretty much hand in hand with expectations. Okay, here's some things that I want you to accomplish. Right. But here's the expectation. Wherever there's a certain standards from time, whatever the case may be, if those are not communicated clearly. What are we setting ourselves up as leaders for.
And I've learned a lot so far in my one year in the world's greatest Air Force. And I mean that, and you want to know Why have learned so much. We are all leaders. Every single one of us. We all learn from one another I am surrounded by leaders we are surrounded by leaders. What I really want to see. Is someone humble.
Oh yes sir. Let's see.Okay yeah so I'm regurgitating what you said and make sure I'm clear, I am. I'm a senior authority, right, but I see you, as somebody who's subordinate to me not respecting that, this is all how I would handle things if I was in that situation. So it's not Bibles I think you have to follow, but it's, it's the route that I would take. Yes, I did have someone his name was Sergeant Raymond
versus technophiles.
Can anybody spot something on his chart I know it’s hard to see does anybody spot something on this chart that doesn't, you don't understand
strategy. Those are really the rafters, the frame.
Warriors, their pursuits are not out of envy or greed.
You want to leave a legacy in life, you give your Airmen, your undivided attention when they have a problem
I’m Like do I want to take care of my airmen because I'm the first sergeant. And then I said no I want to be the person so I can take care of my people. And if you're one of those people, and you want to have a gratifying career you want to be part of something bigger than yourself, then absolutely look into it.
I thought, this is the time to change.
You have to be the one person thinking outside the box trying to improve everything for all of your enemies. You have ideas there. I want you to have one of those. That's good. We're gonna work together on that because that's what we need okay
And then I worked with the State Auditor's Office for a bunch of years, kind of bounced around, went to work for PricewaterhouseCoopers, large consulting firm for a bunch of years and worked for them, then I got into higher ed and work at MIT.
This is a battle, leading yourself leading each other, leaving the organization you're blessed to lead. It's who you are, while you're doing what you do. And we are all a work in progress. So, here.
