In celebration of 100 years of aviation, the Indiana Air National Guard’s 122nd Wing commissioned a two-tone black and grey paint scheme on one of their A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft. The design was recently completed at the Air National Guard Paint Facility in Sioux City, Iowa.
Complete with their distinctive 122nd “Blacksnake” nose art, the design is a departure from the standard tactical two-tone grey, with the colors break along standard lines of the A-10 paint scheme.
The design on the A-10 honors both the “Blacksnakes” from Fort Wayne and the “Racers” from Terre Haute with distinctive tail flashes on either side of the aircraft. Engine decals show a special Indiana Air National Guard centennial logo showing the years 1921 to 2021.
The 122nd can trace their beginnings to before 1946 when the Air National Guard was established following the 2nd World War. The Indiana Guard began their aviation operations in 1921 when the 137th Observation Squadron was initially based in Kokomo, Indiana.
Air Force units can get permission to temporarily paint non-standard markings on aircraft as part of unit heritage and moral programs.
The 122nd A-10 paint scheme is one of several commemorative liveries recently painted by the ANG paint facility as a number of Air Guard units have been celebrating significant anniversaries. The Air National Guard paint facility is part of the Iowa Air National Guard in Sioux City and has been painting small fighter aircraft since the 1990’s.
