    2d Theater Signal Brigade

Message from COL Michael R. Kaloostian, Commander, 2d Theater Signal Brigade

    Brigade of Excellence,

This Monday, May 31, marks Memorial Day, the day the United States officially honors and mourns our military personnel who perished while serving the Nation.

Originally named Decoration Day in remembrance of America’s Civil War dead, Memorial Day became a federal holiday in 1971. While Decoration Day began as a grassroots effort to pay tribute to the fallen, Memorial Day has grown to become a special day of observance across all 50 states and US territories.
CSM Null and I encourage you to reflect on the heroes that made the ultimate sacrifice this weekend.

While doing so, please pay special tribute to our 2d TSB teammates that have been lost over the BDE’s history - Soldiers, DACs, and Host Nation Employees. As you’re aware, we have faced tragedy twice in the past six months.

Last December, we lost SSG Setariki Korovakaturaga, a true warrior and family man, who passed away tragically of respiratory complications from COVID-19.
Last month, we lost Ms. Juliana Fiedler, a LN employee who was most recently assigned to the BDE S4, but served the U.S. Army for 18 years, many of them being with 5th SIG CMD and the BDE. Juliana lost her life in a car accident while on leave in her home country of Kenya.

The BDE S1 team conducted research to determine other teammates who passed away while serving in the Brigade of Excellence. Unfortunately, the data only exists after the 5th SIG CMD inactivation and we’re missing the cause of death for three of our teammates. It is our intent that we’ll have a more complete list next year as we intend to conduct a BDE Memorial Day Ceremony that will memorialize our fallen.

As you reflect, CSM Null and I want to wish you all a safe and relaxing holiday weekend. Life is beginning to return to a state of normalcy and I’m confident that we’ll soon be able to conduct larger in-person team building events and travel. We also want you to be safe.

God Bless you all. Excellence Always!
