On April 2 a suspect rammed a car into a barricade at the U.S. Capitol, killing one U.S. Capitol Police officer, and severely injuring another. The USCP then called on the National Guard’s Immediate Response Force, who responded to the scene to provide support within minutes.
The IRF is composed of National Guard members from five different states, who are ready around the clock to deploy in support of the USCP at a moment’s notice. On April 2, members of the Indiana National Guard’s IRF were on call and responded to the incident, while members of the New Jersey National Guard acted as the command element.
