190521-N-N0701-0001 NORFOLK (May 21, 2019) Marine biologists from U.S. Fleet Forces Command and Naval Facilities Engineering Command Atlantic, along with Seabees from Amphibious Construction Battalion (ACB) 2, discuss how a specialized sonar camera – an Adaptive Resolution Imaging Sonar (ARIS) – is used in shallow-water environments to observe the behavior of fishes exposed to underwater construction activities. The ARIS camera assists in providing a more realistic assessment of fleet training impacts on marine life. The “Stewards of the Sea: Defending Freedom, Protecting the Environment” outreach program is designed to showcase the Navy’s efforts to monitor and mitigate the potential environmental effects of activities without jeopardizing the safety of our Sailors or impacting military readiness.
