Garrison Commander Col. Hui Chae Kim reads the Tree City USA proclamation during the Fort McCoy 2020 Arbor Day observance April 24, 2020 in front of McCoy's Community Center at Fort McCoy, Wis. Only a few people were on hand for the observance that acknowledged the installation as a Tree City USA for another year. Arbor Day is a time set-aside to appreciate trees and forests. It is a holiday that celebrates the planting, upkeep, and preservation of trees. Arbor Day founder J. Sterling Morton started the observance in the late 19th century by organizing a statewide Arbor Day for Nebraska. According to the National Arbor Day Foundation (NADF), Morton was a respected agriculturalist and is widely known for his push to educate the public about updated agricultural and forestry techniques. During the first Arbor Day, an estimated 1 million trees were planted. Today, many communities across America recognize Arbor Day every year in late April.
