200426-N-JU894-0002 NORFOLK (April 26, 2020) Jacqueline Bort Thornton, a marine resources specialist with Naval Engineering Facilities Command Atlantic, describes the use of marine autonomous gliders to monitor for the presence of large whales from the sounds they make in the water during the Navy Office of Community Outreach’s first virtual Tri-Cities Tennessee Navy Week at the “Stewards of the Sea: Defending Freedom, Protecting the Environment” exhibit. The Navy’s environmental outreach program is designed to showcase the Navy’s efforts to mitigate the potential environmental effects of activities without jeopardizing the safety of our Sailors or impacting fleet readiness.
