A ship’s sponsor, chosen by the secretary of the navy, is typically a female selected for her relationship to the ship’s namesake or its current mission. The John C. Stennis is pierside in its new home port, Norfolk, after completing a seven-month deployment, and is preparing for refueling complex overhaul.
