The Soldiers of the 7362nd Veterinary Detachment, a Washington Army Reserve Medical Command unit, set out early in the morning toward the Sunrise Stables and Sunset Equine Rescue in the town of Grapeview. It is Battle Assembly weekend and the goal of the Veterinarian Soldiers this Sunday is very specific.
The Army Reserve detachment is full of Soldiers who care for animals full time in their civilian jobs but most of them do not work on large animals. If they were deployed overseas like Afghanistan, they would team up with a civil affairs unit and go to local nationals’ farms and treat the health of their animals and livestock.
The Sunrise Stables and Rescue rely on donations and volunteers. The horses they have are used for therapeutic horse rides and interaction with children and adults as well as teaching basic horse-riding skills and training for shows.
