Each year the United States honors members of the military, police, fire fighters and first responders who gave their lives as part of Patriots Day on September 11.
As part of the activities during their September training weekend, four members of the Iowa Air Guard’s 185th Air Refueling Wing were honored by the head of the Iowa Air National Guard for their part in assisting with a recent motor vehicle accident.
All four individuals stopped at a rollover accident where they immediately started giving aid to the accident victim on the Sunday evening following their training weekend in August.
After helping the victim with first aid they directed traffic in order to ensure the safety of other motorists passing by the scene. Working together they kept the victim safe and called 911 to request assistance.
Master Sgt. Adam Wright works full time as a paramedic for the Sioux City fire department, Technical Sgt. Donovan Masters is a deputy police with Woodberry County in Iowa, Capt. Paul Niles works as a Physician Assistant and Technical Sgt. Loni Kuhlmann works as a contractor with Iowa Guard.
The efforts of the group did not go unnoticed when over their September training weekend they were given the commanders coin from Brig. Gen. Shawn Ford who is the Deputy Adjutant General for the Iowa Air National Guard.
In his comments Ford said that these Guard members are the very definition of Patriot. He added that many members of the Iowa Guard, like the four honored, serve twice because many of them are also members of the police department, fire fighters and first responders.
