    U.S. Army Garrison - Japan

    Narration:
U.S. Army Garrison Japan’s Fire and Emergency Services, along with the U.S. Army Aviation Battalion Japan, recently participated in the annual Sagamihara City disaster drill, which was conducted on an area of returned land next to the U.S. Army’s Sagami General Depot.

Interview: Shinichi Arima, Crisis/Emergency Response Management Office, Sagamihara City
Today’s drill was conducted based on Sagamihara City’s regional disaster prevention plan, which has the objective of a prompt and smooth implementation of disaster emergency measures against large natural disasters, achieved by cooperation among the relevant organizations.

    Narration:
Participants from Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, the Japan Ground and Air Self-Defense Forces, and U.S. Army Japan demonstrated a variety of disaster-response skills during the exercise, including a supply drop and airlifting injured personnel, which the U.S. Army Aviation Battalion Japan performed.

Interview: Takanori Saito, Fire and Emergency Services, DES, USAG Japan
Today we conducted a rescue operation and rescued two simulated injured personnel from a collapsed building, which required us to conduct technical rope and rescue techniques, and we also used a ladder as a slide to rescue them from the building. This type of exercise is very beneficial for us to facilitate an interaction with other organizations so that we can work more smoothly and effectively.

Interview: Kentaro Motomura, Mayor, Sagamihara City
We have three U.S. military bases within Sagamihara City and we have signed a mutual agreement for disaster preparedness and response with U.S. Army Garrison Japan. Today, the commander of U.S. Army Garrison Japan and his team were able to participate in the exercise and I think that we were able to confirm the effort that Sagamihara City and the U.S. Army in Japan have working toward. I believe we can strengthen our relationship even more by working closely together.

Interview: COL Thomas R. Matelski, Commander, U.S. Army Garrison Japan

    Narration:
More than 100 different organizations and close to 2,000 people took part in this year’s disaster drill. Reporting for U.S. Army Garrison Japan, this is XXXX XXXX.
