Adm. Charles Ray, vice commandant of the Coast Guard, speaks during the commissioning of the Coast Guard Cutter Benjamin Bottoms, a fast-response cutter, at Coast Guard Sector San Diego, May 1, 2019. The cutter is named after Radioman Benjamin Bottoms, who was part of the Coast Guard aircrew that rescued an Army aircrew from a downed B-17 off Greenland’s coast in 1942. During the second day of rescue operations, radio contact with Bottoms’ plane was lost, and he was declared missing in action. The Benjamin Bottoms is the fourth and final fast-response cutter to be homeported in California. Coast Guard video by Petty Officer 1st Class Patrick Kelley.
