The Coast Guard commissions the Coast Guard Cutter Benjamin Bottoms, a fast-response cutter, at Coast Guard Sector San Diego in California, May 1, 2019. The cutter is named after Radioman Benjamin Bottoms, who was part of the Coast Guard aircrew that rescued a Army aircrew from a downed B-17 off Greenland’s coast in 1942. During the second day of rescue operations, radio contact with Bottoms’ plane was lost, and he was declared missing in action. The Benjamin Bottoms is the fourth and final fast-response cutter to be homeported in California.
