15 years ago today, Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan Bruckenthal made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. He was conducting maritime intercept operations in the North Arabian Gulf as part of Coast Guard Patrol Forces Southwest Asia aboard the USS Firebolt.

Bruckenthal and six other coalition sailors attempted to board a small boat near the Iraqi Khawr Al Amaya Oil Terminal. As they boarded the boat, it exploded. Bruckenthal later died from the wounds he sustained in the explosion.

Coast Guard Training Center Cape May took the time to educate recruits on the sacrifice that Bruckenthal made for his nation and to remind them to always remain vigilant.

The recruits we train today will become the ready, relevant, and responsive Coast Guard workforce of tomorrow.
