Soldiers with the Jordan Armed Forces' 10th Border Guard Force, alongside their U.S. Army counterparts from the California National Guard's 1st Squadron, 18th Cavalry Regiment, took to the range after five weeks of training during the Jordan Operational Engagement Program with the M252 mortar system on Feb. 13, 2019. The M252 81 mm mortar system is a medium weight, high-angle-of-fire weapon, utilizing an 81mm round, used for long-range indirect fire support.
At the beginning of training, Soldiers are shown the proper procedure and techniques of mounting the mortar, placing the weapon into action, proper sight picture through the M67 sight unit, pre-fire checks, and direct-lay target engagements.
As the 1-18th CAV continues to train side-by-side with soldiers of the JAF, Soldiers are able to build a shared understanding of the each other's procedures while employing the direct-lay engagement technique. The joint-mortar teams were able to effectively communicate and engage targets up to 1300 meters with on-the-spot corrections without a forward observer to feed them information.
Training conducted between the JAF and U.S. Army have solidified the importance of the Jordan Operational Engagement Program, creating an ongoing and strong partnership through shared tactics, techniques and procedures.
