185th Air Refueling Wing of the Iowa Air National in Sioux City, Iowa learned this week that they have been awarded the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.
The award is earned by units like the 185th for exceptionally meritorious service.
The evaluation period for the award was from January 2017 to December 2017. This is the 10th time the unit has earned the award.
The 185th ARW has over 900 full and part time members. The main mission of the unit is flying and maintaining the KC-135R Sratotanker mid-air refueling aircraft.
The Air Wing is also tasked to support the state of Iowa during state emergencies where they provide humanitarian relief as part of national disaster response.
According to the Outstanding Unit Award citation, the 185th contributed to war fighting efforts by deploying 205 of their Airmen outside the continental United States and to locations in the U.S.
During the time of the evaluation the unit was also preparing 190 Airmen for a Reserve Component deployment that began in 2017 and ended earlier this year. The unit simultaneously deployed to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar and Anderson Air Force Base in Guam.
The Air Force Outstanding Unit Award is given to units that have distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious service or outstanding achievement that clearly sets the unit above and apart from other Air National Guard units.
