Interviews with a tank platoon commander and the Oppdal mayor from the day when the United States Marine Corps secured an expeditionary airfield with the help of local authorities during the simulated battlefield operations in Oppdal, Norway on November 1, 2018.
Exercise Trident Juncture 2018 brings together around 50,000 personnel, 10,000 vehicles, 65 ships and 250 aircraft from 31 NATO Allies and partner nations. Held in Norway, the NATO exercise started on 25 October and continues through 7 November.

“What’s going on? We travelled here, showed up here about a month ago and we’ve
prepped the tanks for Trident Juncture. This past week we’ve conducted CET-FIT,
which is a Combat Enhancement Training Force Integration Training, which allowed my
unit, as well as 2 nd LAR (Light Armoured Reconnaise), 4 th LAR, CEB (Combat Engineer
Battalion), and some Norwegian battalions to integrate prior to Livex. The integration
was necessary in order to conduct rehearsals for the exercise. Today is D-Day for the
division. We kick off here. We’ve moved down from Berkåk to just north of the Oppdal
Airfield where we’ve begun to prep our vehicles in support of the overall seizure of
Oppdal.”

“Working with NATO has been an extremely rewarding experience. The Norwegians, for instance, have provided us with cold weather techniques, tactics, and procedures. We’ve used their CSS battalion to move our heavy equipment and we’re planning to use the Spanish and Italian as the opposing forces in the seizure of Oppdal so hopefully after that seizure they can provide feedback to myself, my crew, the tankers here on things they saw as well as we can work with them and talk about things we saw on our end.”

“Working with the other nations, interacting socially, has been rewarding as well. I’ve gone out in Trondheim and talked to the locals. I’ve spent time in Meldl and Storås, the municipalities just north of us. I’ve interacted with schoolteachers as well as kids and they’re all positive and receptive of us being here. They’re quite friendly and in one instance, the teachers in Storås, who I’d like to thank, made all of my platoon waffles.”

“It’s been a unique experience. First of all, it’s been quite cold. Some of the terrain we don’t see specifically the mountains or the tree lines or the opportunity to drive on these high-speed avenues of approach, which is different for us. It’s quite different from Camp Lejeune, the amphibious beach, the hot sticky climate that we’re used to but my guys are adapting well and we’re continuing to work with NATO, the partners who are familiar with the training here to provide us with advice on how to better employ our systems or just bear the cold weather environment.”

“The greatest benefit out of working with NATO in support of an exercise like Trident Juncture is defensive alliances and increased interoperability to deal with any threats that any adversaries have.”
