It’s 7:30 a.m. at F. E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming, on a chilly October day. Just a few days earlier, six inches of snow fell on the base, but at the start of Air Force 1st Lt. Gordon Lam’s shift, the roads are clear and the skies are sunny. A member of the 320th Missile Squadron, Lam’s about to begin a 24-hour shift as a missile alert officer deep underground in the middle of nowhere. This is his day.
