A Belgian Artillery Battalion takes part in Trident Juncture with one 105 mm-Howitser. During the
first four days of the exercise Trident Juncture, they took part in a live fire exercise, where they fire
    50 shells a day. With a well-trained crew, a 105 mm-Howitzer can launch around ten shells per
minute, shooting them a distance of up to 15 kilometers.

The target is watched by forward observers, in this case German and Danish Forward Observer
Officers. They direct the fire from a vantage point relatively close to the impact zone.
The Belgian Artillery Battalion will be part of the artillery capacity of the VJTF in 2019.

INTERVIEW (English) Lt Henry Juulmann. “My name is Henry Juulmann, I am a forward observer
officer in the Danish army and as of now, I am contributing to the NATO-exercise Trident Juncture in
Norway. Of course my job changes, the settings, because when you have to cooperate with the
other nations, we have different SOP’s – Standing Operating Procedures – which differs from other
nations. But we have a common one in NATO, so that’s one of the purposes as I see it of this
exercise: we have to figure out which way we are going to conduct covert fire, because there are
different standards from nation to nation. It’s more difficult, it takes a longer time to get the effect
out on the enemy then we want.

INTERVIEW (English): “My name is Julia Zefart, I am a corporal in the German Army. I am 24 years old and my job is to work at the Atlas System and I am also a driver. We are on a course at the moment with the Belgian artillery battalion so we can prepare ourselves to work with each other and we can get a special connection to each other so that we can experience a better working day, working life with the different nations so that we train basically our communication and the way we work so that in case of an emergency we can work together as a group.
