““So I will be the maritime component commander for the force south. This maritime exercise, the maritime part of Trident Juncture, is certainly the most important we have seen since two decades, and maybe more than that. With 35 ships in my force, 70 total, a very huge force, a very great opportunity of training.”
“Well, first, Trident Juncture is offering a very huge number of ships. So, we are talking about interoperability, about force management, about information management, so that will be new for a lot of ships who are in navies and working alone, but also that will be a tremendous opportunity, for instance, for amphibious operations, and we are not training a lot in that field. Here, in Norway, and thanks to the host nation, they are offering a lot of opportunity, a lot of places to train in amphibious, so that will be tremendous in that aspect.
“Maritime capabilities are important. First, because they give you the room of maneuvering, because we are also talking about protecting the sea lanes of communication. As a reminder, 80 percent of the goods are travelling by sea, to reach all the continents. And so it’s important that the navies are there to protect those sea lanes of communication. So the navy provides a lot of flexibility. You can move your forces from one point to one other in a free space, get closer, get visible or not, some strategic messages depending on what is the situation and what is the political meaning.”
