Interview with Col Oleg Nechepuruk, Pilot and Commander, 146th Air Brigade. The interview took place after the opening ceremony of Clear Sky 2018, a multinational, flight-centered training exercise held at Vinnytsia Air Base, Ukraine.
(speaks Ukranian)
(What do you hope this training exercise will accomplish?)
“The main goal of the exercise is to gain knowledge. The first step is the ability to work with NATO countries, to work together and toward a common goal of supporting peace in the world.”
(What is the biggest challenge getting so many militaries from different countries to work together?)
“We have many challenges, but the main one is the language barrier. We need to get more of our people to speak English in the future so that we can better communicate with our allies.”
(What do you hope this exercise accomplishes for all of the participating militaries?)
“We hope to work on common procedures and common goals to make sure that in the future we can operate together so Ukraine will be better on NATO standards and be able to use the same equipment and procedures. The goal is to collaborate and to be part of NATO, specifically to gain the ability to provide low-altitude flying during the night. Right now we cannot do it. The second specific task is to utilize our aeromedical application aircraft, currently waiting for NATO approval. As soon as that happens, it will help with this mission.”
