In honor of Yuko O'Reilly, the Mother of the Wolfhounds, the 27th Infantry Regiment conducted a three mile esprit-de-corps run followed by a remembrance ceremony, on Sept. 7, 2018, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
Yuko O’Reilly, the honorary mother of the “Wolfhounds,” 27th Infantry Regiment, passed away on August 23, 2018.
For decades, O’Reilly continued to maintain Wolfhound ties with the Holy Family Home, an orphanage in Osaka, Japan, that her late husband, Master Sgt. Hugh O’Reilly, began supporting when the regiment was part of the Allied occupation of Japan.
Master Sgt. O’Reilly, formerly an honorary regimental sergeant major of the Wolfhounds, was stationed in Japan with 1st Battalion, 27th Inf. Regt., in 1949, when he came upon the orphanage. After seeing the conditions for the Japanese children, O’Reilly made a dedicated effort with his fellow Wolfhounds in donating funds to the impoverished orphanage after an impromptu Christmas visit.
