Charlotte native, Lance Cpl. Nicholas O'Brien, paid the ultimate sacrifice. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division and was killed in action while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan in 2011.
