This week the Iowa National Guard has been playing host to a pair of German Air Force officers who are in Iowa this summer as part of military to military exchange program.
The past few weeks Major Andreas Feld and Lt. Julia Renke of the German Air Force have been touring various Iowa National Guard facilities in Des Moines, Fort Dodge and Sioux City.
Following a flight from Des Moines to Sioux City onboard an Iowa National Guard Black Hawk helicopter, Feld and Renke boarded a U.S. Air Force KC-135 midair refueling aircraft where they got to ride along during a refueling mission with the Iowa National Guard's 185th Air Refueling Wing.
During the flight they crawled in the back of the aircraft in order to witness a mid-air refueling of F-16 fighter aircraft.
Following the flight they were allowed to take the helm in a KC-135 refueling simulator, where they practiced refueling while safely on the ground.
As part of the Defense Military Reserve Exchange Program, officers from various NATO nations come to the United States to get first had look at how military reserve organizations in the U.S. operate.
During their time in Iowa they also toured the remotely piloted aircraft operations in Des Moines and spent time with Iowa National Guard leadership.
