Deployments call for a number of sacrifices; time away from home, loved ones and favorite pastimes, to name a few. For most, those sacrifices include leaving a career behind while deployed—except for this couple.
Meet Staff Sgt. Brian Rank and his wife Tonyia. Married for almost 17 years with 9 children and 4 grandchildren, the Ranks fell into a unique situation after Brian received word of a deployment to Afghanistan with 1st Squadron, 180th Cavalry Regiment, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Oklahoma Army National Guard.
To avoid a pay cut and putting clientele relationships on hold, Brian and Tonyia decided that she would take over his civilian position while he was away. The opportunity not only got Tonyia back into the workforce after years of raising their children, but also allowed her and Brian to alleviate part of the stress that comes with deployments; an experience they faced before when Brian deployed in 2011.
Now, with the deployment’s end inching closer, Tonyia continues to hold down the fort, both at work and at home until Brian’s return.
The 180th is currently deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan as part of the Kabul Security Force in support of the NATO-led train, advise and assist Resolute Support Mission.
